How: T-Rex Cupcake Topper

Since I did one for our spiky friends, here's a tutorial for sharp tooth!

Fondant Tyrannosaurs Rex

Rolled fondant
Gel paste colours
Clean toothpicks
Water
Brown or black sprinkles/jimmies
A rolling pin
A knife
  1. If you are lucky enough to have coloured fondant, then you can skip these steps! Unless you want white-coloured T-Rexes, you will have to dye your white fondant. Get the gel paste in the colours you want and use a clean toothpick to dab into the gel.
  2. Transfer the gel from the toothpick onto the fondant. Knead and roll until the fondant is completely coloured. Please do not double-dip the toothpick, use a new one if you need more gel for a darker shade.

  3. There are 6 parts to making a T-Rex. You will need to make the head, body, arms, and legs separately. The body is almost in the shape of a triangle. There is the narrow and pointy tail, but the rest of the body remains the same size.

  4. You will need to use a sharp knife to cut the mouth on the head. One sharp cut will do, then gently open the mouth. Fill the mouth with white coloured fondant.

  5. Attach the arms and legs to the body. Use a small dab of water if you need to. The arms on a T-Rex are tiny and short! =)

  6. Using a sharp tip or knife, etch in the teeth. Create a zig-zag pattern along the center of teeth. Add a sprinkle or jimmy to create eyes. Then, carefully attach the head onto the body of your T-Rex. Use a tiny dab of water if you need to. Set it aside to dry.
My! What GRReat teeth you have!

  9. How far in advance of a party do you think you could make these fondant dinos? L.

  10. Hi Anonymous (L.),

You could make these fondant dinos a week before a party. As long as you keep them in a clean and dry container, but not sealed or in the fridge, they will last for a very long time.

    Cheers!

  11. Hi :)

What was the weight measurement you used for each peice?

I love him he is so adorable :)

  12. Hi Simone,

Hmm, that's tough to say, we've never measured the fondant dinos! All I can say is that the T-Rex is about 5-6cm tall. I hope that helps?

    Cheers,
    Sylvia

  17. These are seriously adorable! I must confess that I'm not all that creative but I'd love to try this. Did you just shape the parts of the body freehand? I'm trying to put together a dino bday party for my almost 3-year old. :)

  18. Hi there,

Thank you! Yes, the body parts were all made freehand. I think that as long as you get the basic shapes, your 3-year-old will know they're dinos! ;)

  19. Thanks sooo much for this info!! If you want to be able to eat the dinosaurs can you still make them a month before or should they just be done the week of the party? Also when you store them should they be in a sealed container to stay softer?

  20. Hi there,

As long as you store the fondant dinosaurs in a clean, dry, and cool area they will be edible. So if you make them 1 week in advance or a month in advance, it should be fine. I usually don't want my fondant decorations to sag so I don't seal the containers, I leave a little breathing room so they don't go too soft. Otherwise, all your hard work will have gone to waste!

  21. they are so adorable! :) i will be making them soon! :)

  22. what do i do if they sweat? do i keep them in the fridge or out?
    ReplyDelete
  23. Hi Georgia,

They shouldn't sweat in a dry, cool, room. I've never stored them in the fridge before, so I can't tell you what will happen. Although friends have "saved" our fondant decorations in their fridges before and they appear to be okay that way too.

    Cheers,
    Sylvia
